About the role
Goal Get It! is seeking Summer Program Mentors to guide high school students as they complete a small, individualized summer research project for the first time. Mentors are the primary point of support for students—providing structure, supervision, and encouragement as they learn how to investigate a question, interpret results, and communicate what they find. Mentors may also lead small discussion groups tied to program material. We provide program-wide curriculum (lectures, labs, journal clubs), and mentors are welcome to volunteer to teach parts of it.
Note: If you want to join before the summer program begins, you’re welcome to contribute to curriculum development, please apply through the Curriculum Developer role: https://apply.goalgetit.org/recruit/position/curriculum-developer-summer-program-t4ykj1
Available programs: Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Astrophysics (Astronomy), Mechanical Engineering
What you’ll do
Mentor 1–3 students (or more depending on availability) through a structured summer project.
Meet regularly with students to set goals, review progress, troubleshoot, and build confidence.
Teach core research habits: defining a question, planning methods, documenting work, and presenting results.
Help students read and discuss introductory literature or technical references relevant to their project.
Coordinate with program staff on timelines, expectations, and student support needs.
Use AI tools substantively to draft meeting agendas, generate scaffolding questions, help students plan milestones, and support documentation—while teaching students how to verify information and use tools responsibly.
Education & experience
Current undergraduate or beyond (BS/MS/PhD candidates welcome).
1+ semester or summer experience doing research in a relevant field (includes course-attached lab research or independent research).
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Ability to communicate online (Slack, email, Google Meet) and manage Google Workspace (Docs/Sheets/Slides).
Passion for teaching, mentoring, and helping students build independence.
Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and cross-cultural humility.
Substantive AI-tool fluency to support mentoring workflows, with careful verification and privacy-minded use.
Nice to have
Prior mentorship experience (tutoring, TA’ing, coaching, student org leadership).
Experience guiding beginners through technical work and building study routines.
Comfort facilitating small-group discussions.
Working conditions
Remote mentorship with recurring meetings during the summer program.
Some evenings/weekends may be helpful to accommodate student schedules.
