About the role

  • Score applications consistently and write clear, objective comments that support committee review.

  • Identify strengths, concerns, and missing information using rubric-aligned language.

  • Flag potential conflicts of interest, policy concerns, or sensitive issues for escalation to the review lead.

  • Participate in calibration/training sessions to align scoring standards across the reader team.

  • Use AI tools substantively to improve efficiency (e.g., note drafting, rubric cross-checking, consistency checks) without entering applicant personally identifiable information (PII) into external tools; final judgments and scoring must be your own.

  • Strong writing skills for concise, professional reviewer comments.

  • High integrity and discretion handling confidential applicant information.

  • Reliable time management and ability to meet deadlines.

  • Comfort using AI tools responsibly for drafting and consistency workflows while maintaining confidentiality and verifying outputs.

Nice to have

  • Prior experience reviewing scholarship, fellowship, grant, or admissions applications.

  • Familiarity with equity-minded evaluation and bias-aware reviewing.

  • Experience working in education, nonprofits, or youth development.

Working conditions

  • Remote, independent work with periodic check-ins or calibration sessions.

  • Work volume may increase near application deadlines and decision periods.

  • Must maintain confidentiality and review materials in a secure environment.

  • As a non-exempt position, hours worked must be accurately tracked and approved; overtime requires advance approval.

Compensation

This is a non-exempt, hourly position. All time worked must be accurately recorded in accordance with applicable wage-and-hour laws and organizational policy. Overtime is paid where required by law and must be pre-approved in writing by the Lu Memorial Foundation.

This role is open to candidates regardless of location. This role may be offered as paid or unpaid depending on program needs and candidate preference/eligibility.

  • Paid readers: Expected hourly range (USD) $20.00 – $45.00, based on experience, responsibilities, and location.
